Mother Breastfeeding NewbornBreastfeeding Support - Morning Star Birth Center
To some women, breastfeeding comes as naturally as sneezing! Yet, many other mothers (new and experienced) need guidance and reassurance about breastfeeding. Some even find it downright difficult. Breast milk is the single most essential food for your baby. Unless mother or baby has a severe medical problem, breast milk will be the only food her baby will need for many months. Breastfed babies are happier and healthier! The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization strongly promote and encourage prolonged breastfeeding. Many common interventions and routine birth practices inhibit a baby's natural instinct to nurse at birth. We are careful not to disrupt this important phase of the birthing process. Visit within a few hours of birth; we will make sure that the baby is able to nurse, and that Mom gets slow and personalized instruction on how to hold the baby, position the breast, and get baby to latch on. It is a topic that we'll ask about every day after birth until you and baby are nursing smoothly.

Continued Support After Birth
A midwife or lactation specialist will be available at no charge in the days and weeks after baby is born to help ensure a good nursing relationship. Mothers are encouraged to participate in a breastfeeding class, offered at the Center, where we discuss the mechanics of nursing, latching on, positioning and as well as psychological and emotional issues that can arise with and about breastfeeding. We encourage pregnant mothers to contact their, local La Leche League group, and can refer you to the group in your area.
